Can You Hear Me Now?
Kevin Zimmerman, Senior Editor, 1to1 Media. At Yahoo!, where a single month can net 100,000 comments, "it's obviously unrealistic to expect a product manager to read and respond to them all," says Devon Child, senior product manager, feedback platforms. Child explains that Yahoo! uses an Island Data system that allows the company to aggregate feedback and highlight recurring issues or problems, which then can be addressed quickly. Yahoo! has also established its own internal platform, Tango, as an interactive, two-way feedback forum with a message board–like application for users to make suggestions on which other customers vote and comment; Yahoo!'s product managers moderate the forums and note when something has been fixed or updated.

Analytics is growing field in San Diego
Guy Jones likes to call his company's software a smoke detector. And this year, alarms were blaring for one of his largest clients.Jones is president of Carlsbad-based Island Data, whose software scours e-mail, online feedback forms and other customer comments for trends or criticism.

Next Wave: What Will This Look Like?Guy Jones, Island Data
Whereas we've focused on existing text data-streaming in from online customer feedback utilities or from e-mails-to provide real-time decision support, we are moving into helping businesses create online user communities. This sharpens the conversation and can empower a company to follow through on the number-one rule of business: "Listen to your customer."
We see a true 360-degree view of the customer as an approaching reality for businesses. We intend to lead this development by providing business owners and executives with better dashboards, characterized by less data and more knowledge.
The level of excitement that new analytics developments continue to generate amazes me every day. It's not over by a long shot!

Q&A: Guy Jones; President of Island Data
Can you give an example of how your software helped a company head off a problem? An online media provider had a critical misprint in a leading headline article about a mining disaster in Kentucky. The company received 40 e-mails about the misprint in the first nine minutes the article was online. Our software automatically notified the editor that there was faulty information contained with the article, and the editor was able to correct the information. We were able to detect this emerging issue and give them the opportunity to fix it before it got out of control.Read full article
